IRS Issues

The following article entails the viewpoint and opinions of Doug Johnson, who has spent ten years and thousands of dollars researching companies and firms within the debt relief industry.

Help with IRS Debt

I am not an attorney and I do not have a license to practice law or give legal advice. The following information is for educational purposes only and should not be construed as legal advice.

I feel a need to clarify that although I have spent the past nine years researching companies within the debt relief industry, the companies do not include those who assist people with IRS issues. Only recently have I felt a need to locate remedies for people with IRS issues, primarily due to the increasing number of people who are experiencing delinquencies in paying their taxes.

I have, however, heard “war stories” for the past nine years from clients who have dealt unsuccessfully with the IRS. My comments, as follows, are based on feedback from clients.

I am convinced the biggest mistake someone can make in dealing with the Internal Revenue Service is to attempt to do so alone. The IRS is relentless and sometimes even ruthless. They can take your wages, your property and, in some cases, your home to collect tax debt.

IRS officials are paid to collect money for the United States Treasury, not to help you. Anything you say to them can, and probably will be used against you. It is also a federal crime to lie to a federal officer so if you say something to an IRS official and your statement is later determined to be incorrect, you may be accused of lying.

Doug Johnson’s Rule #1: Don’t talk to employees of the IRS.

Doug Johnson’s Rule #2: Employ the assistance of a licensed professional who will advise and represent you.

Rule #2 applies even in simple matters such as non-filing. Tax professionals indicate that you could go to jail for not filing a return, even if you don’t owe tax for the year or years you did not file.

I strongly suggest retaining a professional who specializes in IRS delinquencies. It should be someone who has a lengthy, successful track record in assisting people with tax issues. Someone who understands how the IRS functions, and has an in-depth knowledge of their rules and procedures.

An experienced tax professional may be able to compel the IRS to set up a payment plan with you, refund penalties or discharge your tax debt in bankruptcy. I have even seen cases where a knowledgeable professional convinced the IRS their client could not pay them, and the IRS put their cases on hold and gave up trying to collect from them.

A tax professional with 30 years experience in assisting people with IRS issues was recently a guest on my radio show. It is my opinion that he is the most experienced and knowledgeable advisor in the industry. Click here to listen to my interview with him.
